Strong business support is giving Republican Chris Dudley a major fundraising lead over Democrat John Kitzhaber in the race for Oregon governor.

Dudley now holds a $2.2 million fundraising lead over the former governor.

Dudley has raised nearly $5.9 million since he started his campaign, compared to $3.7 million for Kitzhaber, according to a flurry of financial disclosure reports filed last week with the secretary of state’s office.

While Dudley has relied on a strong level of support from businesses and corporate executives, Kitzhaber has leaned heavily on labor unions for support. All told, unions have given the former governor more than $725,000 — about a fifth of his donations. Much of that money has come in recent weeks as the Kitzhaber campaign has scrambled to counter Dudley’s heavy advertising advantage on the airwaves.
