PSU pulls back on payroll proposal

Portland State University on Friday said the university will withdraw a controversial measure that would have added a payroll tax and raised $35 million..

Instead, PSU, its foundation and local business leaders have launched an initiative to raise $25 million for scholarships and other student programs. The school and the Portland Business Alliance announced the initiative Friday morning.

The new College Affordability and Success Coalition will develop a plan to raise “$25 million per year in new and discrete funding by 2019.” It will target “disadvantaged students from the tri-county area with scholarships and resources that support their academic success,” PSU leaders said in a release.
