An open source technology convention returns to Portland this week, while a software startup specializing in open source announces major backing.
The O’Reilly Open Source Convention returns to Portland this year, after a controversial one-year move to San Jose.
OSCON helped attract software startup Puppet Labs to Portland from Tennessee last year, and now the company plans to announce a $5 million venture capital investment.
Puppet, formerly called Reductive Labs, plans to use the money to ramp up its engineering team. It will add a vice president and several more developers to improve its software, according to chief executive Luke Kanies, and lease bigger offices within the city.
OSCON features keynote addresses this week from technologists at Intel, Google, Facebook and Microsoft, among others. Portland Mayor Sam Adams, who lobbied to bring OSCON back to the city, will address the conference Friday morning to talk about governments’ efforts to adopt open source.
