If policy requires developers to provide parking sites, that could mean higher rent for tenants.
Rising rents in the past three years have supplanted street parking as the most polarizing issue in the city. And [Mayor Charlie Hales], who in 2013 led the charge to increase parking requirements for developers, now says he’ll vote against expanding them.
“There is more awareness around the housing affordability issue, which should give anyone pause when making regulations that increase the cost of housing,” says Tony Jordan, founder of Portland Shoupistas, which advocates for progressive parking policies.
