The Portland Housing Bureau will provide homeless people with bus tickets if they can prove they have a support system elsewhere.
In an unusual request out of step the city’s normal budget process this morning, the bureau said that that money—along with another $2 million for other efforts—are necessary as Portland struggles to fight its homeless crisis amid rising rents and ongoing no-cause evictions.
The $30,000 request for bus tickets is the first we’ve heard of the proposal. It didn’t show up in documents posted last week, detailing the funding requests from the housing bureau. Instead, it was introduced as an amendment in council chambers.

In related news, the tiny house project that helped low-income and homeless people in Eugene is heading to Veneta.
SquareOne Villages — a nonprofit organization formerly called Opportunity Village Eugene that created a development of tiny houses off North Garfield Street — wants to build a similar project in Veneta for homeless or economically distressed residents, officials with the group and city announced Wednesday.
The project would build 10 to 20 houses, each under 250 square feet, somewhere in the city. Few of the details have been ironed out, including the location, exact number of houses, project cost and rents occupants would pay.
