Residents questioned city officials about toxic air response during a community meeting at Tubman Middle School this Thursday.
‘How many months is it going to take to set up a response system that when within an hour you are there capturing the air? Because if I have a fire, the fire department is there in 10 minutes. If there’s a gunshot, the police are there within 10 minutes,’ one resident asked.
… ‘We found that rates of bladder and lung cancers were not higher than expected. We will be doing similar work in North Portland as well,’ Dr. Bruce Gutelius, chief science officer for the Oregon Public Health Division, said.

KATU reports that Portland Mayor Charlie Hales and Multnomah County Chair Deborah Kafoury sent Governor Kate Brown a letter, stating that 2011 calls for regulations went unmet. The letter is posted on Scribd.
Arsenic and cadmium coming from Bullseye Glass was detected in the air near two southeast Portland schools, but the same substances have been found in north Portland air, according to the The Scanner.
One woman at the Thursday meeting said people can taste the chemicals in their mouths, and they “awake coughing and choking with bloody sinus and headache,” according to KATU.
