Carl Greve shut down its Bridgeport Village location without notice last Saturday, surprising both employees and customers.

The closure is part of a family rift between Carl “Nick” Greve III and Carl “Tim” Greve IV, the father and son who own the franchise’s downtown Portland and Bridgeport locations, respectively.

Nick Greve owns Carl Greve Jewelers Inc., which was founded in 1923, and operates the Southwest Broadway store. Tim Greve founded Carl Greve Jewelers LLC in 2005, when he opened the mall store.

“It’s sad for all involved,” said Tim Greve, adding that his store will re-open briefly from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday for customers to pick up their jewelry. “I’d hoped my daughter might be able to carry on the legacy… in the family business that I grew up in.”
