Supporting a new generation of thoughtful leaders
Following a national search, Concordia University School of Management announces that Michelle M. Cowling, PhD will serve as the new dean, beginning this July.
Dr. Cowing brings her experience as associate dean at Pacific University’s College of Business in Forest Grove, OR, to her new role at Concordia University-Portland. She has taught courses in management, operations management, and organizational behavior and is widely published on topics including management, engineering, technology, and resource stewardship. She earned a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a master of science and a doctorate degree in industrial engineering from Stanford University.
“Ms. Cowing brings passion, experience and commitment to preparing business leaders who will graduate prepared for dynamic workplaces where they can truly make a difference,” says Concordia’s Chief Academic Officer Mark Wahlers.
Cowing resonates with the School of Management’s mission of preparing future business leaders to make a positive impact. “Concordia has a compelling mission and demonstrated record of innovative action and positive impact,” she says. “I’m excited to join in its efforts to engage and transform the next generation of skilled and thoughtful leaders of organizations and of society.”
A shared vision
During the past three years, the School of Management saw the highest growth in its history, significantly expanding its MBA program, number of students, and degree options. It also earned national recognition by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and is a member of the global SAP University Alliance.
Cowing is impressed with Concordia’s track-record of innovation and impact. “The school is doing great things in curriculum and partnerships with the business community,” she says. “My role will continue to support and advance these strengths. My overall vision for the School of Management is that we firmly establish ourselves as strong and active contributors in advancing Concordia’s mission to produce thoughtful leaders.”
Cowing’s enthusiasm for her new role extends beyond her professional life. “I am so impressed with Concordia,” she says. “My family has lived in Northeast Portland for last four years and know what a wonderful asset Concordia is in the neighborhood. I’m excited about what the university stands for—education, community and service.”
