U.S. housing starts have been in decline since 2005, but Oregon starts fared worse than the U.S. overall during the first six months of 2008, dropping 45% versus 32% nationally. This compares to a 19% and 25% decline in Oregon and the U.S., respectively, during 2007. Oregon single-family units have fallen 50% so far during 2008, while multi-unit starts have only fallen 34%. Regionally, the South had half of all new housing starts in 2007, while the West accounted for nearly a quarter of them.
