  • Romanian immigrants dominate adult foster care niche

hey Guest #42 If you are as good at everything in life as you are at spelling then forget it! You may have some issues that those romanian business owners have nice cars and homes but remember that this is America and you can do it as well... It takes a lot of effort and risks and after that you can talk. You and your american fellows should be happy that your mom and pop are taken care of and someone is there to feed them and wipe their butt clean ...

  • Oregon has worst graduation rate in the country
    Guest
Oregon has very strict graduation requirements. Because passing high-stakes testing is required to graduate, students are more likely not to graduate and drop out. Get rid of the test and watch the rates rise. There are no exit exams in Kansas where a student can warm a seat for 4 years and receive a diploma, the result: Kansas has a higher graduation rate. Ditch the test and graduation rates will rise, not taxes.

As usual the Limousine Liberals running Portland have dissed working people who need opportunities for good jobs in a growing industry. There is all this talk about income inequality, increasing the minimum wage but when a company offers a new opportunity the ideology trumps reason once again. Who needs a job right?

Good Job Nike. Don't always agree with them, but glad to see them stand their ground on this campaign. Unfortunately, too many "thugs" wear their shoes, so those are the only ones offended by this. One tweet says police have killed 420 people in 2015. I wonder how many people "thugs" and "gang bangers" have killed in 2015, that is not being reported daily?

MD Anderson is also home to some of the best biomedical research in the world. You can't just throw money at the problem if you don't have the team to follow through - and you can't build that team from scratch. Portland is a great place to live, but where do you hire people to work with you when there are no top-tier undergraduate and graduate institutions in the area? Who do you hire when every person under 35 years of age wants to work a 20 ...

I agree with Jack, least bothered by paying a couple cents for a gas jockey. Travel to WA state and the cost differential is insignificant. However the fact that I pay 9.9% in income tax and property tax is also substantial means I am left with little in the end. (BTW I am a renter but I recognize that part of my rent check is paying property taxes.) The tax burden must be reduced. It is a killer.

Have to disagree with Melvis. If taxes aren't cut elsewhere, then we all know that in a few years, we will hear once again how broke the schools are, even with new income. Or it will be some other program needing money. Now, I do support, 100%, giving more money to the schools, because they are under-funded. But, no more taxes. If taxes were the answer, then everyone would already be happy now because we already pay enough in taxes. Pumping our ...

To my fellow Oregonians... at some point you have to be willing to sacrifice one of your "birthrights" -- Not pumping gas and no sales tax. A 3% sales tax would go along way toward solving this problem. And don't tell me to cut taxes somewhere else if you're going to impose a sales tax. That's the problem There's not enough money going into education in Oregon. We've become the Mississippi of the the West Coast. That's embarrassing.

Houston's also trying to get in on the biotech action. Texas Medical Center has in excess of 5700 researchers, a $3.6B research budget, and is offering low-cost infrastructure to lure established firms. Might be interesting to follow the failures or successes there.

OK so you're saying that Moda was counting on the taxpayers subsidizing their bad decisions and insufficient rates used to lure customers with artificially low premiums...know ing that Uncle Sam would come in to rescue them? Maybe they should sell the Moda Center and pay their bills?

As usual, Martha is right on: get to know your grantees; respect their expertise and commitment (e.g. remember what it's like to make $18,000 per year); and invest in thoughtful business models and strong leadership, including some that are willing to take risks. Oregon needs more philanthropy leaders like her, who can be both very smart - and humble.

A tax credit for angels and individuals making equity investments in Oregon start-ups would greatly increase capital access, create new companies and jobs. Consider: Most new equity funded newly launched companies fail to return on the investment. The majority of the investments are lost. It takes one or two major successes to make up for the companies that fail. The return on investment is realized only when the company is acquired, goes public or ...

I enjoyed reading Martha's comments, and applaud the Miller Foundation for their continued commitment to operating support in their grantmaking portfolio. Having worked in both the arts and higher education, I can vouch that in the arts - even at a major institution like the LA Phil - unrestricted support is fundamental to creating and presenting art of all kinds.

Probably about 30% Philipino owned and the rest are owned by other... So yah... you'll have to do a lot of "turning in" ... good luck with that!
