A $31 million project restored freight rail service on the Coos Bay Rail Line between Eugene and Coquille.

Roseburg had not been able to ship wood products by rail from Coquille since the rail line was abruptly closed in 2007 by a Florida hedge fund that had acquired the rail line’s parent company earlier that year. The hedge fund said it didn’t have the money to repair aging tunnels on the route.

The Port of Coos Bay bought the line in 2009-10 and is now near the end of a $31 million rehabilitation project, port officials said Monday.
