Essential Health Clinic shut its doors in Hillsboro and Tigard after providing free urgent care for 12 years.

Founder and interim executive director Sue Neal said it was a simple case of a nonprofit that didn't get funding.

The story is more complex. After examining hundreds of pages of records and interviewing former staff and volunteers, The Oregonian learned how Essential Health Clinic ramped up spending by hundreds of thousands of dollars in its last two years. Money that went to fundraising events, new administrative staff, and a new executive director with a six-figure salary.
