Report hints at size of Apple's Prineville data center

The first phase of Apple's Prineville data center will be small, according to a regulatory report on how much energy it plans to use.

Apple won't discuss the size of its project, but state records show that the company is installing just a quarter of the backup generating capacity of Facebook's Prineville server farm right up the road.

The permit review by the state Department of Environmental Quality describes nine diesel generators with a total capacity of 22.5 megawatts. But data centers typically install more backup power than they need, so that number doesn't reflect the actual size of the facility.
