Rep. Mark Johnson wants brewer's yeast to become Oregon's official state microbe as a way to honor the state's microbrew movement.
But naming an official state anything isn't as easy as it sounds. Jory soil hit speed bumps in the Senate on its way to a designation as the state's official dirt, and a 2009 effort to anoint the Marionberry went splat.
"Oregon is regarded nationwide as ground zero in the thriving craft brew industry," Johnson said, pointing to Full Sail Brewing Co. of Hood River as an example of that industry's growth.
