Oregon parents more likely to join workforce

Oregon parents join the workforce at a higher rate than the national average.

For Oregon parents, working is the standard, the Employment Department report shows. The percentage of Oregonians in the labor force with children younger than 18 hit 82.6 percent in 2011, two percentage points higher than the U.S. mark.

Among mothers, that difference is even wider: 73.5 percent in Oregon compared to 70.6 percent nationwide. Oregon dads have a slightly lower participation rate, at 92.9 percent, versus 93.5 percent in the U.S. The labor force gender gap shrinks among parents with children ages 6 to 17.
