Oregon coast prepares for dangerous debris

A dangerous form of debris could soon wash up on the Oregon Coast.

However Oregon’s CoastWatch group notes that the phosphine gas fumigant canisters aren’t coming from Japan. Instead, the highly toxic canisters are used on U.S. boats that carry grain and other products.

The canisters have increasingly shown up on Washington beaches, leaving open the threat that they’ll appear in Oregon. Phosphine is a fumigant on grain ships that can become extremely flammable as the gas’s residue mixes with water and expands.
