More than 4,000 Oregon Health & Science University patients have been notified that their personal information was in a surgeon's laptop that was stolen.

The people affected underwent surgery between late 2012 and Feb. 13. An initial count showed nine people's social security numbers were breached, but that number has since grown to 17, according to OHSU. Those people will be offered free identity theft monitoring.

The university is sending letters to affected patients, It has also set up a toll-free phone line, 1-877-819-9774, so patients can check whether their information was in the laptop.
