Apple reveals green data center plans

Apple reiterated its plans to use only "renewable" power for its new Prineville data center.

Apple said it's committed to reducing its environmental impact and to lowering its carbon footprint. The company said it now derives 75 percent of its power from renewable sources -- up from 35 percent in 2010.

Data center energy use has become a hot topic in the Northwest and beyond because these massive server farms use huge volumes of electricity -- as much as a small town -- to power thousands of computers and to cool those long corridors of hardworking machines.
