Senate considers extending timber payments

A Senate committee is considering extending county timber payments for another year.

The hearing before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee will underscore both the political complexity of devising and ratifying a new system to funnel money to rural counties and the perilous financial shape of counties that rely on the money to finance law enforcement, schools, libraries and other critical services.

The county payments program poured about $100 million a year in Oregon. It was the federal government's response to rural counties that are dominated by federal land, tight budgets and a sharp decline in timber revenue.
