Jobless benefits dropping

Weekly unemployment benefits will drop 10.7% starting March 31, the Oregon Employment Department says.

Officials there said the decline was caused by Congressional spending cuts that took effect last week. The move hits the federally funded Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, which kicks in when state unemployment benefits expire after six months.

Every week, more than 1,000 people in Oregon fall in to the federal program, unable to find work. In all, more than 28,000 Oregonians cashed checks through the program during the week ending February 23.
