Portland Saturday Market returns

The Portland Saturday Market returns this weekend for its 40th season.

Since 1973 the arts and crafts market has grown to become the largest continuous market in the nation, now operating 258 booths for 10 months a year. It attracts thousands of visitors each weekend and vendors generate at least $8 million in sales each season.

When it started, there were about 30 booths selling homemade cakes, macramé, and pet rocks, said Reid Decker, marketing manager for the nonprofit Portland Saturday Market. Now a product review committee approves items for quality before they're allowed in the market.
