Automatic federal spending cuts could close 100 air-traffic control towers at smaller airports, including five in Oregon.

Oregon airports on the list: Salem, Klamath Falls, North Bend, Pendleton and Troutdale.

Aircraft could take off and land in Salem without air traffic control, as they do at many airports, such as the one in Aurora. But the margin of safety is less without air traffic controllers at work.
