Adidas is introducing a new "Energy Boost" shoe, which took three years of development, double the normal time.

Adidas officials believe the spongy cushioning of the Boost's sole – created with compressed cushioning capsules, similar in appearance to Styrofoam -- will offer an appealing feel for serious and not-so-serious runners. As the world's second largest sporting goods company, to No. 1 Nike, Adidas hopes the shoe will not only boost its running shoe sales but burnish the company's reputation as a source of athletic innovation.

The Germany-based company, which keeps its North American headquarters in Portland, has summoned hundreds of bloggers to today's event in New York City. Several of the Adidas' top executives will be on hand to underscore the message that the company is a leader of innovation.
