Portland to charge for white stag sign usage

Portland city officials are starting to charge for the use of the Old Town Portland Oregon sign.

City officials are marketing the likeness of the Old Town beacon for $100 to $1,100, depending on the size and type of business. The rules apply to all commercial activity, such as apparel licensing and filming.

About two years ago, city officials took control of the neon sign and agreed to cover $2,000 a month in costs. They changed it from "Made in Oregon" and trademarked "Portland Oregon" in 2011. Marketing began last fall, but no one paid attention until this week.
