Portland commissioner proposes sick leave rule

Commissioner Amanda Fritz proposed a mandated sick leave rule for Portland businesses.

Labor advocates have been pressing the Portland City Council since last year for a fix for hourly employees who fear losing their jobs if they miss work, even when they or their child is sick. San Francisco and Seattle are among places with similar laws.

As currently written, the proposal would require all private employers in Portland and the city of Portland to give employees up to 40 hours off each year, awarding one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked. For businesses with at least six employees, that time off would be paid; smaller companies would be required to provide unpaid leave. Employees would need to work at least 240 hours a year to qualify.
