Microsoft has submitted plans to develop a downtown Portland site just one block away from Apple's planned big new retail store.

[Microsoft has] been opening stores around the country, following the lead of Apple's highly successful retail strategy.

Historically, Microsoft hasn't sold its own computer hardware -- with a few exceptions, notably the Xbox video game console. But the company launched its own tablet computer last year, the Surface, and is widely believed to be preparing its own phone.
