The Springfield school district is offering a new opportunity for online courses.

It’s the first year the district has offered the program and 63 students — from the elementary grades up through high school — have signed up for either part-time or full-time online classes.

Springfield decided to offer online classes because it was losing students choosing virtual education at two Oregon online charter schools. Last year, the district lost 180 students to such programs, according to Jane Falls, who coordinates the district’s online instruction.
