Many of the younger generation of filbert growers in Lane County are returning to farming life, in contrast to the rising average age of farmers elsewhere.
“I never thought about being a farmer earlier on,” said 39-year-old Jason Dietz, grandson of Harold Rice, one of the original filbert growers in the area.
Dietz grew up on the East Coast, went to art school, and worked at restaurants in the D.C. and Chicago areas. He moved out here 4½ years ago.
“My grandfather gave me the opportunity to try farming,” Dietz said. “But he was skeptical at first. I was an art student and a city boy.”
