An extension of the federal unemployment benefit program will help an estimated 35,000 Oregonians.

That number could change depending on the state's economic recovery, which economists expect will remain subdued in 2013.

The Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefits kick in if workers exhaust state-funded payments after six months.

More than 29,000 Oregonians last weeks cashed EUC checks, which stood to be the final payments before lawmakers extended the program. It now runs through December 2013.
