Gas prices skyrocketed in 2012

People paid more at the gas pump overall in 2012 than any other time in history.

GasBuddy, an organization that analyzes fuel prices nationwide said that people paid $3.63 per gallon on average last year. By contrast, in 2011, gas cost an average of $3.51.

The elevated gas prices recently caught the attention of Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) who joined their colleagues from Washington state and California to demand the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to conduct a refinery-by-refinery investigation.
