25,000 Oregonians to lose unemployment benefits

Federal unemployment benefits will run out for 25,000 Oregonians by the end of the year.

If lawmakers do nothing, residents who have exhausted their 26 weeks of state benefits and were getting federal supplementary assistance will receive their last checks Jan. 2, 3 or 4, according to Tom Fuller, spokesman for the Oregon Employment Department.

Those checks will cover the last full week in December, and recipients will be cut off even if they were entitled to a few more weeks of federal assistance.
