Fred Meyer gets new president

Fred Meyer chose Lynn Gust as the chain's new president. He has worked for the company since he began as a bag boy in 1970 at $1.65 an hour.

Now as president, he'll oversee the 133 stores in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

Gust says one of his top priorities as the new chief is to create an emotional connection between Fred Meyer and customers, plus find ways to better use the Internet for online shopping.

Because after touring the latest phase of the South Waterfront development, a mind boggling 1.5 million square feet of office and retail space that will spring up north of the aerial tram over the next few years, I couldn’t stop thinking about the massive project as a modern day creation story.

Striving for social equity is the mission of many nonprofits, and this year’s 100 Best Nonprofits to Work For in Oregon survey shows employees are most satisfied with their organizations’ fair treatment of differing racial, gender, disability, age and economic groups. But as a national discourse about racial discrimination and equity for low-income groups takes center stage, data show Oregon’s 100 Best Nonprofits to Work For still need to make progress on addressing these issues within their own organizations.

Earlier this month, the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) announced they were going to devalue their currency, the Renminbi. While the amount of the targeted change was to be roughly 2 percent, investors read a lot more into the move. The Renminbi had been gradually appreciating against the U.S. dollar (see chart) as to attempt to alleviate concerns of being labeled a currency manipulator.
