Electric car owners are more well-off and well-educated than the average consumer, new reports say.

The reports add to a notion of electric-car owners as affluent people not concerned about the high purchase price of current plug-in vehicles compared with ordinary cars, or even conventional hybrids.

In the past two years, plugs-ins — including the $36,050 Nissan Leaf, powered only by electricity, and the $39,995 Chevrolet Volt, which has a gas engine to back up its electric motor — have attracted wide attention, but not huge sales. About 26,100 Leafs and Volts have been sold so far this year, about 0.2 percent of vehicle sales.

Electric cars will remain a small portion of the market unless automakers can find ways to cut prices and boost perceived benefits, says a study by J.D. Power and Associates.
