Hanjin Shipping managers say lost-wage claims filed by the longshore union at the Port of Portland are "fake grievances."
[Leaked] emails, written before a longshore union chapter announced plans to strike Sunday over separate issues, reveal frustration on the part of the main ocean cargo carrier calling on Portland's container terminal. Port officials worry that chronic labor problems, including the union claims described as coercion by National Labor Relations Board lawyers, will push shipping lines to depart permanently, harming Oregon's economy.
In his Nov. 6 email, [Hanjin vice president Mike] Radak tells the officials at the Pacific Maritime Association, the West Coast organization responsible for negotiating longshore contracts, that the South Korean shipping line won't pay the union's claims. Portland union locals send bills to the shipping lines for lost wages each time electricians plug, unplug and monitor refrigerated containers, or reefers, a job that longshoremen say is theirs.
