Revised estimate shows fewer job losses in Oregon

Oregon’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in October dropped slightly to 8.6 percent from 8.7 percent. But a new read on what happened in September was perhaps the most significant item in the latest economic report on the state.

In September, the initial estimate for seasonally adjusted nonfarm payroll employment — showing a loss of 7,900 jobs — was far off target, state officials said. A revised estimate released Wednesday shows a loss of 800 Oregon jobs in September.

State officials blamed a forecasting model used by federal economists for overstating September job losses.

Science to the rescue: Researchers at Oregon State University have developed a spray-on film that cuts rain-related cracking in half, potentially saving a season’s crop. The coating, patented as SureSeal, is made from natural chemicals similar to those found in the skins of cherries: cellulose, palm oil-based wax and calcium.

There are more than 160 farmers markets in Oregon, contributing an estimated $50 million in sales, according to the Oregon Farmers Markets Association. We checked in on the Forest Grove market, which for several years has brought local produce and food vendors to Main Street in the center of town.
