NatureBake merging into Dave's Killer Bread

Milwaukie-based NatureBake is merging into its popular Dave's Killer Bread brand.

Customers snatch up 400,000 loaves of Dave's Killer Bread every week. The brand's available in 10 states, and there are plans to expand to several more within the next year, its 49-year-old namesake Dave Dahl said.

It became clear the brand was the future of NatureBake, rooted in a bakery opened in 1955 by Dave's father, Jim. Brother Glenn purchased the business in 1988, then Dave joined in 2004 after his release from prison. He spent a combined 15 years incarcerated on drug-related charges before leaving behind the lifestyle. By 2005, he was selling bread at the Farmers Market. At the time, NatureBake had 35 employees.

Small business sales go big

Sales of small businesses surged in 2013 according to the biggest Internet marketplace of such transactions, BizBuySell, increasing to 7,056 reported sales, a 24% increase over 2012, when they dropped 7%. Portland Metro sales tracked by the site grew 9% to 73, capping three years of solid growth. On top of that, Portland’s median sale price jumped 67% to $250K, versus just 13% to $180K nationally. Portland was one of just six metros tracked where the median sale price matched the median asking price, with sellers getting, on average, 92% of what they asked.
