OLCC names deputy director as interim chief

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission named deputy director Merle Lindsey as interim chief while the agency seeks a new executive director.

Merle Lindsey, who has worked at the agency for 29 years, will step in immediately in place of Steve Pharo, who will retire Nov. 16 after 18 years at OLCC.

Pharo had resisted an attempt by Gov. John Kitzhaber to force his resignation last spring. The executive director is named by the five members of the commission, not the governor, and a meeting to evaluate Pharo’s status was canceled.
