Hillsboro gears for growth

Hillsboro city officials are preparing for an expected 92% growth in employment from 2010 to 2035.

By 2035, Metro projects more than 113,266 jobs in the city of Hillsboro. The city's population will be an estimated 133,579, and city leaders are bent on addressing a "housing and job imbalance" as the state's fifth largest city figures out what to do with vacant lands. One plan to address the housing shortfall is to add more than 10,000 residences to South Hillsboro.

It’s enough work to keep city staff working long hours, according to assistant planning director Colin Cooper, and a challenge considering efforts to maintain Hillsboro’s “small-town flavor”while “having to absorb a lot of growth,” he said.
