Portland-area groups get $1.8M for manufacturing jobs

Portland-area economic development groups will get a federal manufacturing jobs grant worth nearly $1.8 million.

The Columbia River Economic Development Council, a Vancouver nonprofit, said the grant will bring together employers and universities to focus on manufacturing in a five-county region: Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties in Oregon and Clark and Cowlitz in Washington.

The region is one of 10 across the U.S. to receive a combined $20 million as part of the Advanced Manufacturing Jobs Innovation and Accelerator Challenge, according to a statement issued by the CREDC. The U.S Energy, Labor and Commerce departments, as well as the Small Business Administration and the National Institute of Standards and Technology contributed to the fund.
