Streetcar delay increases costs 75 percent

Portland streetcar contract costs have increased by nearly 75% because United Streetcar's manufacturing is so far behind schedule.

On Thursday, the Portland City Council will consider increasing its contract with LTK Engineering Services to more than $1.7 million. If the council votes to do so, as expected, it will mark the second time city officials have opened their checkbook for LTK, which was hired to monitor work by Oregon Iron Works' upstart streetcar manufacturing branch, United Streetcar.

United Streetcar, based in Clackamas and seeking to become the first U.S. business in decades to manufacture streetcars, is months behind schedule on its $19.5 million contract to build five streetcars.
