DeFazio supports Kitzhaber's search for a logging solution

U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio, who is attempting to allow more logging in western Oregon, supports Gov. John Kitzhaber's push for a logging solution.

Kitzhaber announced Friday he's convening a 10 to 12 person panel to come up with a plan by December for increasing the harvest on what's known as the Oregon & California Railroad timberlands. The O&C lands include about 2.6 million acres laid out in a checkerboard pattern across Western Oregon. Kitzhaber said increasing logging, including allowing modified clear-cuts, will produce jobs and revenue for counties struggling to provide basic services.

DeFazio agreed a bill supported by industry, environmental groups, the counties, the governor and the congressional delegation -- and involving limited acreage of "absolutely unique" federal land -- might have a better chance in Congress.
