Longshore union sues Port of Portland

The longshore union is suing the Port of Portland for giving its terminal operator $4.7 million to cover recent losses.

The federal suit filed by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union names the Port and Bill Wyatt, its executive director. It seeks an injunction against the payment to ICTSI Oregon Inc., which operates the Port’s Terminal 6 container yard under a 25-year lease.

The suit contends the payout, approved by Port commissioners to defray ICTSI’s expenses resulting from a high-profile jobs dispute, is illegal because it helps one side in a private-sector labor disagreement. It also contends the payment violates an article of the Oregon Constitution prohibiting aid to companies.
