Judge denies contempt motion against longshoremen

Judge Michael Simon declined to hold longshoremen at the Port of Portland in contempt.

"The proof will be in the pudding," said Jeff McEwen, manager for the South Korean cargo carrier whose vessels have been bypassing Portland because of work disruptions. McEwen said he will closely monitor conditions at the Port of Portland, where Hanjin plans to bring in its next vessel Aug. 4.

But Bill Wyatt, the Port's executive director, was more positive concerning U.S. District Judge Michael Simon's rulings. Simon is requiring the longshoremen to notify Hanjin, other cargo carriers, terminal manager ICTSI Oregon Inc. and dozens of other businesses that the International Longshore and Warehouse Union will comply with his order.
