An airport watchdog group says the possibility of high lead levels around the Hillsboro Airport warrants installing monitoring equipment.

Miki Barnes, founder of Oregon Aviation Watch, has leveled a number of complaints about airport operations over the years. But she thinks that lead emissions from gas-powered airplanes at the airport, combined with newly tightened national standards for lead, make now the time to determine what is really in the air around Hillsboro.

“The lead issue may be the turning point,” Barnes said. “What’s clear is that monitoring around there really has to be ramped up.”
