Portland considers new hotel tax

A proposal is headed to the Portland City Council to charge a 2 percent hotel tax to pay for tourism advertising.

The tax would apply to hotels with more than 50 rooms, with a 2 percent increase charged to overnight guests. Called the Portland Tourism Improvement District, the program would raise an estimated $6.6 million annually for tourism advertising, branding, promotions and sponsorships.

The city's Revenue Bureau would collect taxes and turn the money over to a Travel Portland subcommittee of hotel representatives, who would determine how to better market travel to Portland.
