Portland considers new hotel tax

A proposal is headed to the Portland City Council to charge a 2 percent hotel tax to pay for tourism advertising.

The tax would apply to hotels with more than 50 rooms, with a 2 percent increase charged to overnight guests. Called the Portland Tourism Improvement District, the program would raise an estimated $6.6 million annually for tourism advertising, branding, promotions and sponsorships.

The city's Revenue Bureau would collect taxes and turn the money over to a Travel Portland subcommittee of hotel representatives, who would determine how to better market travel to Portland.

After reading the descriptions of the 2015 100 Best Companies to Work For in Oregon, a disproportionate number of which feature table tennis in the office, I decided it was time to bring our own workplace into the 21st century.
