Customer support boosted Portland to Washington flight

More than 6,000 customers asked the government to approve Alaska Airlines' new non-stop route between Portland and Washington.

The comments, submitted online, were partly the product of a coordinated effort by Alaska Airlines to win government approval for the flight. They also included independent submissions from business, civic and education leaders and plenty of average people.

Industry officials say comments reinforce the technical arguments that an airline makes. The more comments that pour in, the stronger the impression.
