Jobless rate stalls

Portland-area job gains pushed the unemployment rate below 8% for the first time since November 2008, but the slight drop is within the margin of error.

Employers added 4,100 jobs last month, for a net gain of only 500 after accounting for March cuts.

"The ups and the downs, I guess I've learned to expect that," Portland-region economist Amy Vander Vliet said. "Especially in this recovery, where there's no strong apparent indicator of growth. We haven't built up any momentum yet."

In all, the Portland area has added 10,800 jobs between April 2011 and April 2012, pushing down the unemployment rate from 9.2 percent to 7.9 percent. It's the biggest drop of any region in the state, in part because of size, diversity and industry mix, Vander Vliet said.
