Controversial transportation bill could extend county payments

A stalled transportation bill passed the House, which could lead to renewed county timber payments.

The transportation bill is seen as the last - and most likely only - opportunity to extend county timber payments program for an additional year while officials in Oregon and Congress devise a new and permanent way to provide funding to counties that have a high percentage of federal land.
Counties and local governments faced a loss of money as early as spring for such crucial services as schools, libraries and law enforcement. The provision approved by the Senate calls for $346 million in payments for this fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30. Of that total, Oregon would receive by far the largest share -- $102 million.
