Pacific Seafood settles suit

Pacific Seafood has settled a class action antitrust case filed by coastal fishermen, and it now awaits a judge's approval.

The lawsuit was filed in 2010 by Brookings fishermen Lloyd and Todd Whaley, who claimed to represent hundreds of other fishermen hurt by what they alleged were monopolistic tactics by Pacific and one of its partners, Ocean Gold of Wesport, Wash., where Pacific buys whiting.
The plaintiffs’ Portland attorneys, Mike Haglund and Mike Kelley, initially asked for more than $500 million in damages, then revised that number to between $74 million and $120 million last fall and amended their complaint to exclude Dungeness crab fishermen.
