Virgin America's PDX debut expected to lower fares

Virgin America's announcement of new service between Portland and both Los Angeles and San Francisco is expected to lower fares to California.

Virgin America announced Tuesday it would begin daily nonstops in June between PDX and both Los Angeles and San Francisco, noting: "When entering new markets that offer little low-fare competition, the airline has frequently seen fares drop by up to 30 percent."
David Cush, Virgin America president and chief executive, said in a written announcement that his team was thrilled to offer Portland travelers a different choice "in an industry often characterized by monotony."
"The West Coast to PDX market generally has higher fares than similar flights to Seattle," Cush said, "and the reason is competition."
